How can you tell when a cat is happy? He carries his tail like this: proud, perpendicular, and with a little hook on the end. It's a sign of good breeding, and you'll see it in even the scruffiest alley cat keeping you awake at night.
Saturday Cats: Not a Figurine
Not continuing the recent theme of porcelain Ballard lawn fauna, here we see a real live flesh and blood cat. He only looks like porcelain.
Bunny
Returning to the kitschy-lawn-decoration theme of a couple days ago, here we see a front yard bunny eternally on the lookout for the neighborhood cats.
Palm Tree
Continuing the botanical theme of yesterday, here's a real Ballard palm tree! Of course, it's in south Ballard. More tropical, you know.
Proto-blackberries
When I was a kid I would spend some of the summer with my grandparents, who knew that a good place for energetic kids was out in the blackberry patch. We learned all about work and its rewards when those blackberries became Grandma's blackberry pie. Here we see the wee little ones just starting to grow out of the blossoms. We'll come back later in the summer because I've got Grandma's recipe.
Nobody Here But Us Chickens
There's quite an assortment of wildlife in Ballard's front yards and I've seen a bit of it on my Walk Every Street project. Guess what you'll be seeing a bit of over the next few weeks...
Strawberries
The good ones, grown right here in Ballard. Sweet and juicy, not like those chunks of colored styrofoam that come up from California. Those are a total waste of protoplasm.
6th Avenue Theatre
Ballard has a few "pocket parks," small parks no bigger than a city lot or two. This is a new one on 6th Avenue that features a small stage. Perhaps we'll get Shakespeare outdoors some summer eve and folks, don't mind the kids in the sandbox off stage left.
Strong Right Arm
Aside from big-ass calla lilies, Walter's features Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream, which is only about the best ice cream around. This strong right arm is digging deep into the Mukilteo Mudd. Mmmm, that's mighty good mud!
Wet Dog
And sometimes you'll see dogs swimming at Golden Gardens. This dog simply loved the water, cold as it was, and paid no attention to his hapless owner's calls.
Friday Cats: No Understanding This Standing
I've known a lot of cats in my time and think I understand them better than most people. That sentence can be read two ways: I understand cats better than most people understand them and I understand cats better than I understand most people. Even so, I cannot understand why this cat would stand on a fence with front paws down and back paws on the fencepost.
